ACES is a renowned supplier of activated carbons and carbon filters commonly used for purifying liquids and gases. We provide our clients with advanced filtration solutions that are effective in treating drinking water, purifying wastewater, air, biogas, and off-gases. One of our products is powdered activated carbon. We are eager to tell you more about it, but the fundamental term that needs to be explained initially is activated carbon itself.

Activated carbon is a processed, amorphous carbon material with a microcrystalline structure. The production of activated carbon involves two main stages—carbonization and activation. As a result of these processes, pores are created, making carbon an excellent adsorbent with a large internal surface area. Typically, these values range between 800 – 1200 m2/g.

The conclusion that arises from these facts is that by using different methods to process activated carbon, we can obtain a product with specific properties and purposes. Powdered activated carbon is the best example of this.

What is powdered activated carbon and where is it used?

Powdered carbon is activated carbon in the form of dust, created by grinding granular carbon to achieve a product with particle diameters expressed in micrometers. The use of this type of activated carbon usually requires specialized dosing systems capable of providing the appropriate dose of adsorbent. Powdered activated carbon is mainly produced from high-quality wood or bituminous coal and can be used in various industrial sectors.

Powdered carbon can be used in dry form or as a pre-prepared suspension. It is particularly effective in wastewater treatment, where, after addition, it adsorbs organic compounds on its surface. The carbon, along with the adsorbed contaminants, then settles at the bottom, making it easy to remove from the filter.

Dosing activated carbon into the filtered liquid can occur in a continuous or periodic system.

Applications of powdered activated carbon:

  • treating drinking water (surface water during blooms or groundwater to reduce humic substances)

  • removing organic compounds, such as COD or AOX in wastewater treatment

  • decolorizing chemical and food products

  • removing dioxins, furans, and mercury from gases generated during the thermal treatment of waste.

Sorbotech® powdered activated carbon

The offer of powdered activated carbons from ACES includes four products from the SORBOTECH® brand. These are: SORBOTECH® LPW, SORBOTECH® LPB, SORBOTECH® FP, and SORBOTECH® FPB. The developed internal structure of SORBOTECH® LPW and SORBOTECH® LPB makes them ideal media for treating drinking water, filtering wastewater, or process water by eliminating substances affecting color, taste, and odor. The products SORBOTECH® FP and SORBOTECH® FPB, on the other hand, are excellent at removing dioxins, furans, and heavy metals from exhaust gases.

If you have trouble finding the right activated carbon please contact us via the inquiry form or by phone. Our specialists will gladly provide more information about the Sorbotech® activated carbon offer, select a product tailored to your needs and expectations, and take care of transportation matters. Our activated carbons from the SORBOTECH® LPW and SORBOTECH® LPB series have a PZH Certificate confirming their suitability for use in drinking water treatment.
