ACES is a company providing high-quality activated carbons SORBOTECH® and carbon filters SORBOFIL® used for the purification of liquids and gases. One of the products we offer is formed activated carbon in the shape of pellets, also referred to as cylinders. To better explain the specifics of certain types of activated carbons, we must start by clarifying what activated carbon is in general.

Activated carbon is a processed, amorphous carbon material with a microcrystalline structure. The production can be divided into two main stages - carbonization and activation. During these processes, pores are created, which make carbon an excellent adsorbent with a large internal surface area. The most commonly found activated carbons on the market have a surface area in the range of 800 – 1200 m2/g.

By processing activated carbon in a specific way, we can influence its properties and future applications. The sorption capacities of activated carbons used for gas purification are defined by the CTC parameter, which for formed activated carbons usually ranges from 50% to 60%.

What is formed activated carbon and where is it used?

Formed activated carbon is a type of activated carbon in the form of pellets/cylinders, which are extruded from powdered carbon with the addition of a binder. Using formed activated carbon as a filling in filtering devices results in lower air resistance than a bed of granulated carbon of the same height. Therefore, this type of carbon is mainly used in air and gas filtration and ventilation.

Formed Activated Carbon - Sorbotech®

The formed activated carbon Sorbotech® GE available in our offer mainly includes activated carbons with CTC parameters of 50 and 60. These products are made from carefully selected grades of carbon and will perform well in many sectors of industry. Among Sorbotech® GE carbons, four types can be distinguished: SORBOTECH® GE 503, SORBOTECH® GE 504, SORBOTECH® GE 603, and SORBOTECH® GE 604, differing in pellet diameter and CTC. We sell them in 20 kg packages or in so-called big bags.

Activated carbon with a CTC parameter of 60 is mainly used for the removal of siloxanes from biogas, where the highest degree of purification is required to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the installation. These quality carbons are also used in installations for purifying vapors from laser cutting and welding. Activated carbon with a CTC parameter of 50 will be used for removing culinary odors, purifying gases from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial installations, as well as in smoking chambers and painting booths.

Applications of formed activated carbon:

  • reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • recovery of organic solvents
  • purification of vapors from laser cutting and welding
  • removal of culinary odors
  • purification of gases from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial installations
  • as a filling in smoking chambers and painting booths
  • removal of gasoline vapors
  • purification of natural gas and biogas.

Impregnated carbon – this is usually formed carbon, whose surfaces are coated with an appropriate chemical compound (impregnant). The selection of the right active substance allows the use of the phenomenon of chemisorption to enhance the effectiveness of reactions. Impregnated carbons are mainly used for the catalytic removal of inorganic compounds from various types of gases. The most popular applications of impregnated carbons include:

  • deodorization of air from odor-causing compounds such as H2S or NH3
  • removal of inorganic contaminants from reaction gases
  • purification of biogas from hydrogen sulfide
  • purification of natural gas from mercury
